Ag Weather Impacts

A Pacific cold front is moving across the Columbia Basin today with gusty winds and some showers. Wind gusts to 30 mph are likely on most farms and gusts over 40 are likely in Oregon. Rainfall amounts should be under a quarter inch, but significant snow is likely in the mountains above 4500 feet. Look for a high pressure ridge to bring dry conditions for Wednesday. Then another Pacific weather system is likely to affect the area again late Thursday. Fast moving weather systems will bring another chance for light rain this weekend with temperatures cooling to near normal and occasional breezy winds. With the cooler temperatures and rain this weekend will come an increased chance for livestock cold stress. Soil temperatures are in the upper 30s and lower 40s and should drop 3 to 5 degrees over the weekend. And this means winter wheat and pasture growth will become considerably slower. You can plan for an active weather pattern to continue during Christmas week with temperatures averaging close to normal for late December. So after a slow start for precipitation the first half of December, it looks like the last half will make up the deficit. This westerly flow pattern with frequent embedded weather systems is a good snow maker for the mountains, so it's going to be interesting to see how much mountain snowpack we've added by the end of the month.
